A Pilgrim's Book of Prayers
Gilbert Shaw (1886-1967) first practised as a lawyer, then was ordained priest in the Church of England. His priestly ministry included work among the unemployed in the East End of London in the 1930s, and later in Central London at St Anne’s Church, Soho. He worked for the Association for Promoting Retreats for many years. In the last three years of his life, he was Warden of the Community of the Sisters of the Love of God.

‘Do not strain, do not labour; love and adore, and give God time in silence to speak to and draw the soul ’ This approach to prayer was at the heart of Fr Gilbert Shaw’s teaching. He recommended the simple repetition of a phrase to let the Holy Spirit work through the idea expressed. If the prayers in this book are used unhurriedly, phrase by phrase, they can bring us to a place of stillness where God speaks to us.
